1.0: Thomas Stokes Page, nace en 1815, Moorestown,NJ, matrimonio con Ana María Liljevalch, nacida en 1823

Dr Thomas Stokes Page was born in 1815 in Moorestown, New Jersey to Gilbert and Atlantic French. He graduated from the University of Pannsylvania Medical School in 1836. He sailed from New Castle, Delaware aboard the Mezick and went first to Liverpool, where the young doctor disembarked to tour England and France before rejoining the ship at Bordeaux. From there he went to Valparaiso, Chile, where he had decided to begin his practice.

In 1841 Dr Page married Anna María Liljevalch, the only child of Olof Liljevalch, a native of Lund, Sweden, who had gone to Chile in 1818, and of Mary Anne Delano Liljevalch, a native of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, who had gone to Chile to lve with her father, Captain Paul Delano, in 1820. Captain Delano commanded a Chilean warship in the fight for independence from Spain.

In 1842, the first of the Pages' 13 children was born- Olof, to be followed bu Henry (1845), Charles (1847), Wilfred (1849), Anita (1851), Caroline (1853), Arthur and George (1855), George Thomas (1857), Maria Teresa (1859), Lizzie (1861), Manuela (1863) and William Delano (1867). Caroline, George (presumably Arthur's twin) and Maria Teresa died in infancy.

In 1849 Dr Page bought the Cotate land grant. There are at least two stories about this. One is that an elderly Spaniard in Valparaíso was so geatful to Dr. Page for curing his illness that he offered two California land grants to him in payment. The other is that a prominent Californian, Faxon Dean Atherton arrived in Valparaiso, became a good friend of the Pages, and convinced the doctor that buying land in California was a good idea.

Dr. Page made several trips to Moorestown over the years to visit his family. He made at least one trip to his California land grant in the 1860's to supervise the establishment of new cattle stock. In 1869, aware that he was ill, he decided to move to California. His son Olof had returned from Pennsylvania Medical School, and took over his father's practice. Dr. and Mrs. Page, the three daughters and young William came to Cotati and first stayed with some friends, the Athertons south of San Francisco. They had a large mansion house built on a Cotati hilltop but apparently lived here very little, having settled in a home in San Francisco. Dr. Page died early in 1872 and his sons continued to manage the big rancho (16.000 acres).

Dr. Page's will specified that the rancho was not to be divided until his youngest child, William, was 25 years old. During the years before that momentous milestone, the family continued to operate the ranch -hundreds of cattle- including some famous breeding stock and race horses (they built a track here and the street there is still called Derby Lane).

As William's 25th birthday approached, Charles and Wilfred (who seem to have taken the largest part in managing the ranch) had the land surveyed for subdivision and a town laid out with a hexagonal plaza in the center, surrounded by streets named for the Page sons: we still drive every day on Olof, Charles, William, George, Henry and Arthur streets. Wilfred gave his name to a major street north of town. We also have Valparaiso Ave., Page St., Delano St., and El Rancho- which ran in front of the old mansion (which burned in the early 1930's). In 1893, under the name of Cotati Land Co. (the name had been changed over the years from the American Indian CotatE to the easier to pronunciate CotatI) they begun selling home sites and small ranches. The Pages sold their last interest in the land in 1929.

In 1969 we dedicated Thomas Page School in Cotati, and about 40 descendants of the family came to the ceremony. The one who was our primary source of information was Dr.Pages's great-grandson, Charles Page, a delightful gentleman, who unfortunately passed away in 1997.
